SEBACEOUS CYST

The sebaceous cyst is a benign condition of the sebaceous glands located under the skin near the hair follicles and produce sebum, a substance that lubricates the skin. The cyst is created by the obstruction of the drainage duct of a sebaceous gland that continues to fill with sebum.

The sebaceous gland can grow anywhere on the body. It usually appears in areas such as the scalp, face, back but also in the axillary and inguinal folds.

Εμφανίζεται ως μια σφαιρική και σχετικά μαλακή διόγκωση και συχνά υπάρχει ένα ορατό σημείο επικοινωνίας (στόμιο) στην επιφάνεια του δέρματος. Σε πολλές περιπτώσεις κατά την πίεση παρουσιάζεται έξοδος σμήγματος που μοιάζει με λιωμένο τυρί και έχει οσμή ιδρώτα. Η κύστη παραμένει κατά κανόνα ασυμπτωματική μέχρι τη στιγμή που θα φλεγμανθεί οπότε γίνεται κόκκινη και πρησμένη.

The treatment of the cyst is surgical. The removal is done under local anesthesia and can be performed in the doctor’s office. In cases where it is inflamed and full of pus, it must be opened and emptied. A few weeks later when the acute phase is over and the cyst is smaller in size, it can be removed.
